American Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is our National bird and they nest here in Illinois along the river during the winter.  It is really a spectacular sight to see them sitting so regally in treetops and floating on ice in the river.

The bald eagle had been listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 43 of the 48 lower states until 1995.  In July of 2007 the American Bald Eagle was taken off the endangered species list and is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection.

Fun fact:  At one time the word bald meant white, not hairless.
